NOTES FROM THE TABLE

Meet Scorpion

Keep these points in mind. The tableau has seven columns. Four complete King-to-Ace runs clear the game. Scorpion on it9blog.com uses one 52-card deck with four suits. Moves build down in the same suit rather than allowing cross-suit destinations.

The initial seven columns

The following details apply here. All cards in the last three columns are face up. Three cards remain in the stock. Each opening column contains seven cards for a total of 49 tableau cards. The first three cards in each of the first four columns are face down.

Build in the same suit

A few details help explain this feature. A King cannot land on another card because no higher rank exists. A seven of hearts cannot land on an eight of spades. A moved group's leading card must land on a card exactly one rank higher in the same suit. A seven of hearts can land on an exposed eight of hearts.

Order within a group may vary

The following details apply here. The leading selected card still has to meet the destination rule. Any face-up card can be selected together with every card beneath it. The selected cards do not need to descend in rank to travel together. The selected cards do not need to share a suit to travel together.

The empty-column rule

The following details apply here. An empty column is therefore less flexible than an empty column in ordinary Spider. An empty column accepts a King or a group led by a King. A group led by a lower rank cannot enter an empty column. Cards beneath a moved King do not need to be in sequence.

Uncover another choice

A few details help explain this feature. Undo restores the earlier hidden-card arrangement when the move is reversed. An exposed card can carry the cards beneath it when its own destination is legal. Removing all face-up cards above a hidden card turns that hidden card face up. The next hidden card is revealed automatically.

Use the stock once

A few details help explain this feature. This Scorpion version permits its stock deal when columns are empty. Dealing places a face-up card on each of the first three columns. There are no further stock cards after the three-card deal. The stock contains one final deal of three cards.

Collect ordered runs

Keep these points in mind. The game removes a qualifying run automatically from the bottom of a column. Moving an unordered group does not make that group a completed sequence. A completed run must descend from King to Ace in one suit. All thirteen cards in a collected run must be face up.

Plan around blocked cards

Here are the details for this mode. Replay and Undo let you explore another approach to the same layout. A move can carry unwanted cards along with a useful leading card. Hint lists legal choices without promising a winning continuation. Checking the whole moved group helps you anticipate what will become blocked.

Save a Scorpion session

Keep these points in mind. Scorpion keeps a separate saved position when game saving is enabled. Privacy & Cookie Settings lets you remove local saved games and results. My Statistics records Scorpion starts and wins separately from other variants. Random Scorpion shuffles are not advertised as guaranteed winnable.
